Shane Martin, Sr. Commercial Underwriter

The Human Elements Behind Our Success

Who is Shane?

Shane is a Senior Commercial Underwriter at Elements. Since starting, he has underwritten approximately $150 million in commercial loans.

One of the recent deals was an investment banking loan, which Shane describes as one of the more complex loans. While some of the loans are for existing Elements Members, most of the loans are made with new members of the credit union.

His top five strengths are restorative, futuristic, analytical, consistency, and learner.

The commercial department’s success is a team effort; I’m just one piece of the puzzle.

- Shane Martin, Sr. Commercial Underwriter

What does Shane do?

Shane spends most of his time on the risk management side of commercial lending. This role includes evaluating repayment capacity, proposed loan structure, collateral position, etc. As an Underwriter, Shane reviews aspects such as complete financial packages, new construction project details, and business performance to determine the borrower’s ability to repay Elements.

When did Shane join Elements?

He joined the credit union in June of 2023, but carries over a decade of experience in commercial underwriting. Prior to Elements, he worked in the Fintech space at Sunstone Credit, which specializes in Commercial Solar Financing. He decided to leave his prior role to find a more local opportunity that would provide a better work/life balance, which led him to Elements.

Why does Shane enjoy working at Elements?

He loves his commercial lending team and the variety of deals and projects he gets to underwrite. “The commercial team is great to work with. Everyone understands each other’s roles and respective workloads,” he shares. As a father of three, Shane is thankful for the family-orientated atmosphere that Elements embodies.

Where can we find Shane?

Outside of Elements, Shane spends a fair amount of time coaching his oldest in soccer and basketball. “My wife and I are pretty busy with kids’ activities, but I love watching them grow and be challenged,” he says.

Shane and his wife are also proud owners of a newly established non-profit, Foster the Need. Based out of Howard County, IN, this non-profit provides a free, personalized shopping experience for foster children as they are placed into a new home. “It’s an incredible opportunity for these kids to pick out items that make them feel great while also providing resources and a level of relief for the new foster parents,” Shane adds.

What are some “fun facts” about Shane?

  1. Shane is a drummer and plays most Sundays at his home church! During college, he had the opportunity to perform with some of the most elite musicians.
  2. Shane and his family recently climbed Mouth Tammany Peak in New Jersey on accident! What they thought was a basic walking trail turned out to be much more advanced. Once they realized that this wasn’t a trail anymore, the kids voted to continue to the summit.
  3. Although Shane and his wife got married in July of 2024, the wedding was a Christmas in July theme.
